LONDON (MarketWatch) -- Deutsche Bank said Tuesday that total compensation for its eight-member executive board surged to around 39 million euros ($53 million) for 2009, including a 9.6 million euro payout for its chief executive, as the bank reinstated bonuses for top executives.

The total payout at Deutsche Bank represented a nearly nine-fold increase on the 4.5 million euros paid to the executive board a year earlier.

That increase was in line with the rise in compensation at Swiss rival UBS , though Deutsche Bank was able to return to profit in 2009, while UBS reported its third successive annual loss. See story on UBS payouts to its executive board.

Deutsche Bank said the total base salary for executive-board members rose 51% to around 6 million euros in 2009 following the addition of four new members to the board. It also made immediate bonus payments of 9.6 million euros and allocated a further 22.6 million euros of long-term deferred bonuses paperless payday loans.

CEO Josef Ackermann was the top earner among executive board members, receiving a total of 9.6 million euros, compared with around 1.4 million euros a year earlier.

Of Ackermann's total 2009 compensation, around 70% is deferred and will be paid later, depending on the group's financial performance, Deutsche Bank said.

The second highest earner was Anshuman Jain, the head of the investment-banking arm, who joined the board in April 2009 and received around 7.8 million euros in pay and bonuses for the year.

Shares in Deutsche Bank rose 1.7% on Frankfurt's Xetra market Tuesday, as most European banking stocks gained ground.

Total pay and bonuses across the bank were 11.3 billion euros for 2009, or around 14% below the pre-crisis 2007 financial year.
